July 15 marked an important milestone in Hackensack, as the City celebrated the ribbon cutting and grand opening of Atlantic Street Park, an outdoor park and amphitheater that is another success of the redevelopment efforts throughout the City's main street area.
In partnership with the City, The Upper Main Street Alliance and Boswell Engineering, DMR designed the reuse of an existing parking lot into Atlantic Street Park. The park provides performance areas for spring and summer concerts and productions, shaded seat-walls, grass areas, trellises, benches, street trees, lights and outdoor chess tables.
These projects benefit the surrounding commercial and office space, and support redevelopment initiatives throughout the downtown. The opening of Atlantic Street Park is another success of Hackensack's downtown urban design, planning and redevelopment initiative to provide a modern, lively, downtown atmosphere found in other, competing downtown housing markets.
A few of the other successes of the rehabilitation plan seen in the City includes the beginning of the two-way street conversion of Main Street and the anticipated opening of the Meridia Metro, Heritage Capital and Alkova Companies developments, which include approximately 700 new residential units. An additional 1,000 units of new residential development is in the planning stages throughout the City.
The park's first outdoor performance occurred following the ribbon cutting ceremony.
