On the summer afternoon of August 27, the DMR Staff took a Pontoon boat tour of the 30.4 mile New Jersey Meadowlands along the Hackensack River. The two hour tour left from the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission's marina at River Barge Park in Carlstadt. DMR provided professional services for renovations to River Barge Park, completed last fall.
The tour cruised the River under bridges, past the mudflats of Secaucus and through the Sawmill Creek Wildlife Management Center. The tour continued down Laurel Hill (which inspired the Prudential logo) to the historic portal bridge and tower, back past River Barge Park to Mill Creek and past the 587 acre Richard P. Kane natural area for wildlife.
Along the way, the staff viewed several of the 280 species of birds that live in the area, including egrets, ospreys and mallard ducks. Tour guides recounted the area's rich history through tales of tide gates, pirates and black snakes.
The tour concluded at River Barge Park where the staff could check out the Paddle Center, Boat Storage House and Education Pavilion, all designed by DMR.
