For more than 20 years, the Middletown Library had not undergone any modernizations. Renovations were needed to transform it into a destination that blended tradition with innovation, and better served the community’s evolving intellectual and social needs.
DMR designed renovations to 15,000 SF space to accommodate for new and expanded programming. A reimagined reference desk now offers modern finishes, lighting and an improved layout, as well as new seating options, an expanded quiet reading and fireplace lounge and four new private study rooms.
A computer lab, which no longer met current needs, was replaced with an expanded teen room and makerspace, offering access to technologies and classes in 3D printing, laser cutting, sewing, knitting, and heat pressing.
An expanded history room, quadruple the size of the previous space, now more significantly honors the rich history of Middletown, a community that played a role in the American Revolution. The history room is equipped with rich colors and a fireplace. Artifacts protected by glass and ornate metalwork are juxtaposed with modern technologies, such as smart boards, providing various opportunities for the community to actively engage with the township’s history.
The design reflects a philosophy rooted in flexibility, inclusivity and community identity. Visual connection and natural light were considered through a strategically placed program and improved sight lines. Full-height glass storefronts, larger exterior windows and various flexible seating options were added, including high-top tables, sound absorbing chairs and lounge seating that invites patrons to linger.
The project is part of a wave of library redesigns that are making communities smarter, more connected, and better prepared for the future.
